ENTERING WRIT 100

Hey WRIT 100 friends!

I hope you are finding blogging as interesting as I am and are super excited to be on your career journey.

I believe reading someone else's story or book or blog is the most powerful way to understand how and what there feeling and what sometimes isn't able to be heard without a keyboard or paper and pencil. This is my point of view on the following points about Reading and Writing Skills. As well as points that stand out to me.

1. If you had more time to read / research, what is an issue that you would be interested in exploring? Why?

2. What course learning outcomes and essential skills are you most enthusiastic about pursuing? Which are you most anxious about pursuing? Why?

3. How does the assessment and grading system in this course make you feel? Why?

I grew up always having a soft spot and caring heart for children so I came to Humber to pursue a full time career one day to with kids and their families. That being said a big issue for me that I hope to explore more one day, either in the workplace or within my time here at Humber is the Impact that children had during the pandemic. Everyone has felt the awful feelings and recovery from the pandemic and during it, but I do believe that children are even more and still sort of lost with all the new transitions they've had to make. For many families Housing, Food Insecurity, Mental Health and a Learning loss impacted us heavy but the difference is children do not know the difference to having these things and losing them until they have missed a big gap of it in there life's. Therefore I would love to do more reading and research on how I can help, donate and reach out to families and parents of children that possibly are still struggling with what there little ones are missing or missed. As it is most important that kids are given the most while in the prenatal to 2 years age group so that they reach there fullest potential in the following years.

During high school I feel like I didn't get a period of time dedicated to researching and blogging and writing skills that will forever be in any profession, so these learning outcomes below excite me.

Identifying and analysing strategies that authors use to persuade the audience as well as developing well-structured texts that employ appropriate tone and language towards the context.

These learning outcomes and skills are making me feel like I would be learning and writing from other great writers. I am excited to be able to use other authors strategies and analyze how they are able to grab and persuade the audience, that there context is for but even other attentions. All authors have amazing structured texts that not only flow well and make you want to keep reading, but you can sense the tone that they wanted to give off as well as the language towards the context. I believe that is a challenging thing to learn but once you have a certain audience in mind, I feel like you can really understand and learn them.

I have a very basic learner, and I just mean all I want and feel for my studies is paper and a pencil and a textbook and I'd be good. I don't think any teen or other 18 year old like me in todays date struggles with absorbing technology but there's definitely a preference of what is preferred during learning. There fore I would say I am most anxious about becoming more digital fluent as well as citation practices, those aren't so bad but I do find technology is not always the most reliable nor easiest, but I do believe it can bring you more strategies and for some peoples cases it is weight off there shoulders for certain circumstances.

In this WRIT 100 class I have never had this type of grading and assessment system ever but I feel for many and me as well it is sort of a relieve to submit something and instead of seeing a low number mark that you didn't expect to see, you are receiving feedback and something to reflect back on to improve your work for the next time. I am usually not one myself to get easily hurt over a mark but I do know how it feels to put so much work into something and seeing a disappointed mark. Therefore I do believe this marking system should be used more often even in Elementary school so that instead of children and adults feeling defeated they can reflect more and take time to improve.

Writing prompt 6 questions why we write and and what it is. The reason why I think writing is such a great thing is because everyone writes differently, sounds different too so it is all unique and that's what I love it. I wouldn't say there isn't hate when people write because everyone has there own opinion, but people sometimes feel more worthy and happy when being able to write about what they feel anonymously. I know that I want to start writing more to express myself more easily and through something and be able to inspire many different audiences, I do also believe that everyone's perspective on what it is, is all very different.

Just like our Professor Jessica said "worry less about how good you are, and think more about how practicing reading and writing will make you better", and That is exactly what I will be doing in WRIT 100, I hope you will do the same!

  1. Isabella! Thank you for sharing your insight on the major impact the pandemic had on children's mental health, life adjustment and overall health. I acknowledged that you said that you want to donate and reach out to struggling families and children, I absolutely think that's very heartwarming and kind of you. Do you have any younger children or siblings that you watched the pandemic affect? I would have loved to see more images in your blog to give it a little more of your personality. Overall, you've done a great job on your blog.

  2. Isabella, I was drawn into your post from your opening section, where you took the opportunity to address and include your audience, and I was left feeling with a full circle sense of closure when you did the same in your closing.

I think you did a nice job of integrating your program related interests into your responses to the WRIT 100 writing prompts. Your passion for children's development and well-being comes through, as does your optimistic tone regarding your own learning. You've stated that you want to start writing more to express yourself. You've done an excellent job doing so in this post. Have you ever thought about writing as a way to learn, or make sense of what we've learned, too?

One suggestion for you going forward would be to consider your use of headings in the organization of a piece. For instance, I'd recommend you either use no headings or place each heading (i.e., writing prompt in this post) directly over the paragraph(s) that it refers to, and use headings consistently throughout.

I'm so glad you're enthusiastic about the course, and I look forward to working with you!
